A Day With The MAKNA Kids @ Wet World Shah Alam

1 May 2013  -  This Labour Day was a day of water, food, games, and most importantly, Sharing & Caring. After weeks of preparation and hardwork, Dr. Azma and her angels from Together We Make A Difference (TWMAD), were finally ready for their event "A Day With Kids From MAKNA" at Wet World Shah Alam.  Their aim - to bring cheer and share the pain of cancer-stricken kids from MAKNA.

Members of TWMAD, their friends and volunteers arrived early, registration table was set-up, goodie bags, hampers, gifts and additional treats were efficiently carted into the Event Area, and neatly arranged on the stage.

Soon, the arrival of the Kids and their family members added much merriment to the atmosphere.  17 kids, ranging from 4 to 13 years old, suffering from various cancer, walked in shyly with their family members and seated themselves at the tables.  Dr Azma greeted everyone with the customary welcoming speech and assigned members of TWMAD and volunteers, whom she fondly referred to as Abang or Kakak Fasi, to take charge of the Kids so that their families can be treated to a day-off.  The Abang/Kakak Fasi immediately and efficiently assumed the role of Guardian Angel and saw to it that the Kids' needs are well taken care of.

Get-to-Know Session with the Kids

Our "adopted son" was a 13-year-old leukemia patient named Rohaizat, which Abang Fasi Gary took under his wing with ease. Although initially shy at first, he soon warmed up to us and by the end of the event, he has endeared himself to us, particularly to Gary and Ong.

Hungry tummies were treated to a delicious Nasi Lemak breakfast, after which the Kids and their Abang/Kakak Fasi proceeded to the Games area and soon shouts of laughter and cheers filled the air.  After finishing 2 fun-filled games involving physical activity, they returned to their tables for the second part of the Games Event; Game 1 - Drinking Straw Creation, Game 2 - Word Puzzle and Game 3 - Newspaper Costume.  Hidden talents were uncovered, future engineers and designers in the making - it was fun to see their family members joining in too.

Nobody told me Batman was attending the event too...

After the Games Event, the Kids were finally allowed to get wet, under the watchful eyes of their Guardian Angels, of course. Meanwhile, Dr Azma and a few volunteers, took a short break to enjoy some cupcakes and cookies.

An hour later, the hungry Kids and their Abang/Kakaks, all wet and smiling, returned to their tables for Lunch.  Winners of the Games were announced amidst cheers and prizes given out accordingly.  Lastly, the Kids were each given a Gift Bag consisting of a small cuddly soft toy and other goodies.

The Event ended after a heartfelt speech by Dr Azma, thanking all who has contributed to this event, be it in cash, treats, gifts or in manpower and a tribute to the parents of these kids for their patience and love.  Time flies when one is having fun and today is no exception.  The Kids were returned to their parents, they left not only with prizes they had won and gift bags but also with our prayers that they stay strong and get well someday.
